I Finally Upgraded My Camera!

Up until this point, all of the pictures I have taken have been with a point and shoot camera.  For the longest time I kept telling myself that I would only upgrade when:  A. I could afford it, B. When I got over my fear of actually knowing how to even turn a DSLR on,  and C.  When I could justify the expense in a legitimate way.  I met all of these points  and I am happy to say that I am the proud owner of  a new Canon DSLR camera.

As soon as I walked in the door with my new camera, I started messing around with it.  For someone who is new to DSLR's it's a little daunting to know what all of the buttons and settings are.  I've been reading the tutorials on the Pioneer Woman's site which have been extremely helpful!  But I must say, I still feel clueless.  I know it is going to take a little time before I get this down, but I am hoping that I will be able to take decent pictures in the near future.  Practice makes perfect right? My next step is to sit down and read the entire camera manual- something many photographers recommend.  And although tedious, I think will give me a good understanding of the anatomy and functions of the camera. The next purchase I am saving for are a couple of lenses that I know will give me really sharp and precise photos.  I just added them to my amazon wish list in case you're also in the process of upgraded and are  interested in what I've been researching.

Last night I made a meal that I intend to blog, soon.  My husband asked me "so are you going test out your new toy" and with some trepidation, I nodded and proceeded to shoot the pictures.  Let me just say that I messed around with lots of settings, such as the iso, aperture, manual settings and a few others on the dial.  Some pictures came out really blurry and others too exposed or underexposed. But I think all in all, I managed to get a handful of decent, albeit, imperfect, shots.

I took pictures of the same meal with my trusty ol' point and shoot just to have backups in case I didn't manage to get any good pictures with my new camera.  Since these pictures were taken indoors and at night, I was less optimistic than if the pictures were taken during the day with lots of natural light coming in.  Below are some pictures of the meal I made, using the new camera and then some with the old camera.

These were taken with the new camera:

These below were taken with the old camera- can you  see a difference?

I know I have a lot of learning to do, and these pictures were taken with me not really knowing too well how to operate the camera to it's full capacity, but I am hoping I'll improve in the coming months!

Awesome! Congratuations on your exciting purchase!! Yes, I can totally tell the difference in quality between the pics you posted of your bedroom (and of the food too!). I got my DSLR a year ago, and I started exactly as you're staring--by reading the PW's tutorials, and by reading through the camera's manual. Good luck! You've already got a great eye, so it's going to come together faster than you think. =)

Jenna thanks so much for your encouragement! I feel a little overwhelmed- there's so much to learn! I signed up for a class that starts in May and hopefully that will teach me the finer points of photography, but until then, I'm on my own! I might need to call on your for some photography advice!
