The Reel I Almost Didn't Make

Yesterday I posted my very first Instagram Reel.

That sentence doesn't sound particularly significant until I tell you how many times I've thought about making one before deciding it was probably something I'd figure out "later."

Later, when I had more time.

Later, when I understood video editing.

Later, when I had better equipment.

Later, when I knew what I was doing.

It turns out "later" has a funny way of becoming never.

I've always been comfortable with words. Give me a blank page, a camera, or a recipe to develop, and I know where to begin. Video felt different. Every tutorial assumed I already understood the basics, and every polished Reel I watched made the process seem effortless.

It wasn't effortless.

I spent most of the day learning by trial and error. I trimmed clips. Added music. Changed the text more times than I care to admit. I searched for buttons that seemed to disappear every time I needed them. More than once I wondered if I had somehow managed to make the whole process harder than it needed to be.

Eventually, though, it all started to come together.

The Reel itself was simple. It followed a day of creating floral arrangements for the farmers market. The work wasn't new—I do that every week. The only thing that was new was remembering to reach for my phone and capture pieces of it along the way.

After I posted it, I felt relieved.

This morning I checked Instagram and was surprised to see that hundreds of people had already watched it. That was encouraging, of course, but it wasn't the part that stayed with me.

Last night I was making grilled chicken and grilled salmon with fresh mango salsa for dinner when I instinctively picked up my phone and started recording. A few clips of chopping mango. Fresh cilantro. Lime juice. The salsa coming together in the bowl. The chicken and salmon on the grill. The finished plates.

Twenty-four hours earlier, I wouldn't have thought to film any of it.

Somewhere between making that first Reel and making dinner, I stopped thinking about video as something complicated and started thinking about it as another way to tell a story.

I'm still learning. I still have plenty to figure out. But yesterday reminded me that sometimes the hardest part of learning something new isn't learning it at all.

It's deciding that today is finally the day you'll begin.

I've embedded my very first Reel below.
